Frequently Asked Questions

General Questions

Do I need any musical experience to play the drums?

No, you don’t need any musical or drumming experience of to learn how to play the drums on our site. A background on another instrument may help you understand the lesson materials easily. We’ve made the first few lessons with complete newbies in mind. If that’s you and you have little to no experience, then you’ll want to start with the free lessons in the Simple Basics category.

Do I need my own drum kit before I start learning how to play the drums?

No, you don’t. A drum kit might cost more money than you can afford. but that shouldn’t stop you from trying. All you need are a pair of drumsticks. You could learn the first few lessons playing with just your sticks on a chair and a few pillows. Here are a few alternative ideas:

  1. Call a local music store and see if you can RENT a drumkit for a month. Most stores do and it is usually very cheap to do so. Try it out for a month or two and then decide if you are enjoying it and want your own.
  2. Ask friends or family if they know anyone who might have drums in their home that aren’t being used. You’d be surprised how many people know someone who still has a drumkit lying around somewhere.
  3. Call your local church or school. They might be willing to let you use their drum kit on off times for a small charitable donation.

If you think a drum kit is too loud for where you live, you could consider trying an electronic kit. They are only as loud as thumping and tapping on rubber pads and are played using headphones.

Why do all the lessons include play-along videos?

When in person, a student plays what they are learning along with the teacher in a room together. The play-along videos work the same way. They allow you to practice playing the examples along with me at fast and slow tempos. These videos are set to loop so you can keep practicing as long as you want.

Why are there slow and fast tempo play-alongs?

The best way to learn anything is by doing it slowly first. That’s one of the biggest things that beginners often miss. Most of the time, we want to play something new at a tempo that sounds like music. That’s usually too fast to start off and can create frustration when you’re practicing. By playing slowly, you can better observe what you’re doing and refine your accuracy and technique. This helps you to know that you’re playing it correctly. Practice other exercises from the PDFs on your own. Be sure to play them at the same slow tempo as the examples we learned in the lessons. When you’re ready to pick up the pace, practice on your own until you are ready for the fast play-along.

Fast tempo play-alongs are usually a tempo that is either relevant to a song OR a tempo that is a good achievement with whatever you’re learning. Think of these as little tests or challenges. You should have practiced the material enough to play it at the recommended fast tempos. If you have practiced something a lot and can’t quite get it fast enough, then leave it as a work in progress. Practice something else and come back to it again later. If the fast tempos are no problem, then the sky is the limit and if you can take it further, then go for it!

Why do I need to learn how to read drumming notation?

Drummers don’t always need to read music when they are performing, In a large group setting such as a big band, orchestra or stage pit band however, we do. Learning to read is a practice and learning tool for drummers. In every lesson we guide you through the notation for the examples we play. This helps you to connect what you’re learning with how it looks in musical notation. This is a huge benefit because you can then make sense of the material on the PDF worksheets. This will help you learn many grooves and fills in addition to the one or two examples that we cover in the lesson. It is truly important for your growth and progress as a drummer.

What styles of drumming can I learn on this site?

The Lesson Library includes lessons on techniques and rhythms that are applicable to Rock, R&B, Pop, Alternative Rock, Jazz, Latin and World music, Rap/Hip-Hop, Soul, Funk, Reggae, Blues and Country. In the Song Library you will find lessons on popular songs and how to play them, in all of those styles listed above and with new lessons released every week, our selection is always growing.
